The 49th annual Runhappy Eclipse Awards will be held Thursday night at Gulfstream Park, with the award show itself beginning at 7:00 p.m. Up for Horse of the Year consideration are Bricks and Mortar (Giant's Causeway), who capped a perfect six-for-six season with a win in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf; Maximum Security (New Year's Day), who annexed the GI Xpressbet Florida Derby before being DQ'd from first to 17th in the GI Kentucky Derby and adding three more graded wins, including two at the highest level, to complete his sophomore season; and Mitole (Eskendereya), who is expected to take home Male Sprinter honors after completing his six-for-seven season with a clear-cut victory in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint. Among the seemingly more up-for-grabs categories are Older Dirt Male, which pits Mitole against GI Breeders' Cup Classic hero Vino Rosso (Curlin). There are 20 presenting sponsors of the event, with Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital a last-minute addition. See Friday's TDN for a complete recap of the awards.
